Letter: Hundreds of Ostriches in B.C. Facing Government Cull – Public Voices Needed

Dear Editor:

I am reaching out to you with urgency and deep concern about the fate of over 400 ostriches in Edgewood, British Columbia. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has ordered a mass cull of these birds over avian flu concerns. While the Supreme Court of Canada has granted a temporary stay, the future of these animals remains uncertain.

This is not just a story about animal welfare — it is about transparency, accountability, and the public’s right to know. The owners of the farm, who raised and cared for these birds, have been barred from tending to them while the case is tied up in court. In the meantime, the CFIA controls their custody, despite widespread calls for independent testing and humane alternatives.

I have a strong personal connection to this issue. I lived in B.C. as a child, still have family and friends there, and continue to visit often. I now live in Calgary, Alberta, but I will always advocate for animals who have no voice of their own. To see hundreds of sentient beings face possible unnecessary destruction is heartbreaking, and many Canadians feel the same.

I urge you to cover this story and bring national attention to the following questions:

  • Why is a mass cull being pursued before independent, third-party testing has been allowed?
  • Why are the farm’s owners prevented from caring for their animals in the meantime?
  • How is the government ensuring transparency, fairness, and compassion in this process?

This issue has sparked protests, petitions, and public outcry across Canada. People are demanding answers, and media coverage is critical to ensuring that transparency and humane treatment prevail.

I would be grateful if your outlet could investigate and highlight this urgent matter. Please help shine a light on what is happening in Edgewood before it’s too late.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Kayla Walters
