Five people have been sent to hospital after a three-vehicle collision between Castlegar and Trail Monday, according to Trail top cop Sgt. Darren Oelke.

He said police responded to a call that came in at 2:53 p.m.

“There were two males driving southbound on Highway 22, about two kilometres north of Oasis, when their vehicle crossed the centre line,” Oelke said. “A man driving northbound in a Toyota SUV tried to pull out of the way to avoid the collision, but the southbound vehicle was so far over, it sideswiped the SUV< forcing it into the ditch.”

Behind the SUV was a four-door sedan carrying two females, and it was struck almost head on.

“The three people in the vehicles that were hit were transported to hospital with minor injuries,” Oelke said. “The two males in the southbound vehicle had to be extricated by Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue, at which point both were transported to hospital, also with minor injuries.”

Highway 22 was closed for hours, but traffic was rerouted around the scene.

The driver of the southbound vehicle was charged with Driving without Undue Care and Attention under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Neither alcohol nor excessive speed are believed to have been factors.
