Hwy 97 improved for both four- and two-wheel travellers

August 5th, 2011

Nelsonites traveling through B.C. wine country will find it even more enjoyable with improved passing on Highway 97 north of Osoyoos, along with the addition of a parallel hike and bike trail. Both projects were officially opened today.

Passing lanes were added on Highway 97 north of Osoyoos to provide assured passing opportunities between Osoyoos and Oliver. They make the highway safer for local families, tourists and commercial vehicles. The length of new passing lanes (four-lane section) is approximately two km.

The three-metre wide gravel surface hike and bike trail runs parallel to the highway between 204th Road and Road 22. The trail will add approximately two km to the hike-and-bike trail between the communities of Osoyoos and Oliver.

The $8-million Osoyoos Lake Passing Lanes project was funded under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund and cost-shared between the federal and provincial governments.

This event coincides with the completion of the hike-and-bike trail parallel to the Highway 97 improvements. The trail was a $1-million project funded solely by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Almost 60 jobs were generated over the life of the two projects.

As part of the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is supporting more than 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country.
