Five players garner spots on Zone One West Kootenay Jr Golf Team

Five local golfers will tee it up representing the Zone One West Kootenay at the B.C. Junior Championship July 5-8 at the Rossland/Trail Country Club.

Tanner Kopan of Christina Lake, Redstone’s Kevin Bennett, Garrett Underwood of Champion Lakes and Brenan Moroney of Rossland/Trail were awarded berths in the tournament following weekend qualifying at the Redstone and Birchbank courses.

Tyler McKay of Rossland/Trail was awarded the fifth, and final, spot on the team based on his performance on the Zone One West Kootenay circuit to date this season.

Bennett gift-wrapped his spot on the team by capturing the low gross title at Sunday’s Birchbank with a 4-over-par 76.

The Christina golfer edged teammate Jordan Hoodikoff by a stroke to win the crown.

Hoodikoff, winner of the 17-18 year division, finished one shot ahead of Koopan and two strokes in front of Steve Simister of Rossland/Trail.

In the 15-16-category race, Moroney was first ahead of McKay and Underwood, all three finishing with rounds of 80.

Kaeden Lane of Christina Lake won the nine-hole title with a respectable round of 40.

Saturday at Redstone, Kopan fired a 1-under-71 to overwhelm the field.

Simister, with his best round of the season, won the 17-18 division with a 77 while Underwood captured the 15-16-flight with a 76.

In the 13-14-year-old category Isaac Janzen of Creston was the winner with an 84. Lane shot a 38 to clinch the nine-hole title.

The Zone One circuits shifts to Castlegar Saturday for an 18-hole tourney. Tee off time is 2 p.m. Golfers are asked to pre-register at zone1juniorgolf@yahoo.ca

19TH HOLE: The B.C. Junior Tournament is a 72 hole gross stroke play, which is cut to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes. If there are ties for first place or positions on the B.C. Team to the Canadian Junior, they will be decided by sudden victory playoff immediately following completion of play of the final round. . . .The sixth, and final, spot on the Zone One West Kootenay team will be determined following a tournament next month in Creston.
