While skiing a couple of days ago, I ran into our ski school director and skied a few runs with her. Wendy is one of those graceful women skiers, deceptively fast and smooth. She’s great to ski with. The day started with 18cm of power and by the afternoon the conditions were ‘variable’ to say the least.

The opening weeks of the ski season across our mountains show a smattering of areas opening in early December with this last pulse of moisture and cold bringing snow enabling the lifts to crank up at the few remaining closed.

 For me the New Year’s Day is that first day on the hill.

That event passes on the old and the rings in the new.

If you’re looking for a fun opportunity to exercise in a warm, dry environment, consider Folk Dancing in the Miners Hall this Thursday, December 6th from 7:00-9:30pm.  The group dances English Country dancing and American Contra Dance.  Although both styles of dance are done with couples, it’s best for newcomers to dance with experienced dancers, to quickly get the hang of things.  If you have a partner, bring them along – but a partner isn’t required.  All of the figures are taught and all of the dances are walked-thro

New snow is calling to those who enjoy winter sports, but the Canadian Avalanche Center suggests enthusiasts be observant.

Light amounts of new snow fell in the region on Wednesday night and the forecasted wind and snow will add to the size and reactivity of this developing slab, according to Joe Lammers, one of the center's forecasters in a bulletin. The variety of surfaces which may include weak surface hoar crystals, a sun crust on steep solar aspects, and well settled storm snow from last week are complex.

Deanne Steven from Tourism Rossland is excited about the Mountain Kingdom's chances in Powder magazine's Ski Town Throwdown competition. "As I'm sure you've seen by now, Rossland won the first round of the Powder Magazine Ski Town Throwdown and we are up again in round 2."

 

Shuttle to Red Mountain this season, Gangnam style

Two new shuttle services to Red Mountain Resort have been negotiated for this ski season, one all the way to and from Spokane, and one a short five minute ride between Rossland and Red.

Deanne Steven of Tourism Rossland (TR) announced the new services to Rossland’s council at Monday evening's regular meeting. She was particularly excited by the new in-town shuttle that will use the “pimped out” 24-seat Hummer offered by Lasting Impressions Limousines.
