Ronald Wright, a bore and not inspiring. Underwhelmed by his address.

Wright was awful. The man is dull, his inability to speak informally is painful.

What did he offer us for solutions? "Political will."

Did he have an opinion why our wills have not brought an end to our many problems, human and natural. No. Did he say why 2008 had not changed anything in capitalism? No. Why do the powerful have power over us? Why can Harper lead us into more military spendiing and degradation of our envirnoment etc etc ?

Overall, I failed to see any light in this man, when we need it so badly.

Washington State Wolf Slaughter

It was sad to hear that Washington State allowed and participated in the unnecessary slaugthering of healthy wolves.     They perform a vital function in the wildlife cycle and for the State officials to be a part of the slaughter...especially of the alpha pack pair...is abhorant.   Clearly the State has demonstrated its' priority is not in the protection of wildlife but in the ranchers back pocket!    Hopefully there will be a pair that escaped this State kowtowing to the ranchers and I wish them well and trust they'll become wary of the sound of rotors.

Cui Bono Mayor Dooley?

Bemused by the empassioned stand of Nelson's Mayor Dooley on a City Council Meeting proposal to Stop the Violence, ie decriminalize and tightly regulate Marijuana as the only sensible way to reduce its harms in Society.  One cannot but wonder "cui bono": who stands to gain by his position?  The Mayor seems certain of its popular appeal to the voters; now isn't that a bit odd for the small cool Arts Town much sought for its urbane tolerance of public pot and good times?  Could it be the economy-first vote, then?  How many people in his town are employed by the MJ production and distribution

MINISTRY OF TRUTH: Why do we bother planning when planning apparently means nothing?

Lately, when I’m shuffling through the aisles in Ferraro Foods I’m often stopped by some enquiring Rosslander or another who wants to know what the ‘deal’ is with the sidewalks on Columbia Avenue. People also email me, accost me in the street, and hover over my house in helicopters--but Ferraro’s is the place where most of the important business in town gets conducted, as we all now know.

Columbia Avenue chaos

Construction has started on Columbia Avenue and a summer of chaos is before us.

Many people are trying to find parking spots, figure out how to get into their favourite store, and determine what’s going on and what it’s going to cost.  Others are continuing the debate about what could’ve, should’ve or would’ve been.

No excuse for further Liberal HST stalling

And yet, after the voters ordered them to get rid of the HST, they are incapable of  returning for a full NINETEEN MONTHS to a provincial sales tax regime that was in effect in this province for probably more than 50 years.

Civil disobedience warranted for pipelines, tankers, fish farms, private river power

What is civil disobedience?

I ask because I’m going to be urging such a course in the times to come.

Although he didn’t invent the idea, Mahatma Gandhi invented the modern term when he protested a tax on salt imposed by the British which hurt the poor Indian especially. He broke the law deliberately and went to jail for doing so.

Tales and Legends of the Mountain Kingdom: Rossland's "big deal" red light district

Back when I was a whippersnapper just out of high school, I took a job at Rossland’s now-defunct Co-operative Transportation Society, then commonly called the Rossland Co-op. It once stood where the Credit Union now stands and was once one of three Rossland gas stations, one of two Rossland garages where you could take your car to be fixed, and a place where vans transported Cominco workers up and down the Trail hill.
