Yves Engler to speak in the West Kootenay about Canada's peacekeeping tradition

In his new book, The Truth May Hurt, Engler strips away the layers of former Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson’s past, exposing him as less of a Canadian peacekeeper and more of someone who had colonial, corporate, and imperialistic interests. Pearson’s policies are even described as “sympathetic to South Africa’s apartheid regime” and “the world’s leading intellectual, Noam Chomsky, considers Lester Pearson a war criminal”.
It becomes clear throughout Engler’s book that Pearson’s history is filled with what could even be seen as hostile actions in the name of Canada all around the world.
Engler asks readers “to think of themselves as members of a truth and reconciliation commission looking into Canada’s foreign policy past.”
The book is well-researched and sourced, leaving it open for the readers to shape their own idea of who Pearson really was–this time with the truth instead of Pearson’s ever-powerful myth.
Engler presents Pearson’s words and record, but an image other than that of an altruistic world statesman emerges. He deconstructs the myth of Pearsonian peacekeeping.
