A Kootenay business is a contender in the 20th Annual Small Business BC (SBBC) Awards, which recognizes the contributions of small businesses and entrepreneurs in British Columbia and celebrates their community impact.

Writer’s Block Solutions, a Rossland-based boutique communications company specializing in writing, editing, and digital marketing has been nominated for two categories: the Business Impact Award and the Premier’s People’s Choice Award.

“It’s an honour to be nominated among so many other businesses excelling in their communities, and a reminder that hard work does pay off,” says Founder Valerie Rossi. “We believe that writing is impactful — words matter — and we’re proud that our efforts provide more opportunity, not only for our clients, but for the people they’re connected to.”

The SBBC Award winners in Business Pitch categories (Business Impact Award, Best Youth Entrepreneur, and E-Commerce Success Award) are determined through a combination of votes and the content of their applications, but the Premier’s People’s Choice Award winner is selected solely on the number of votes a business receives.

SBBC recognizes that all BC communities are different sizes, noting that “votes will be normalized against British Columbia Regional District Population Figures” to give businesses in smaller communities a competitive chance against businesses located in more densely populated areas.

For a company like Writer’s Block Solutions, this is especially crucial. The company was founded in 2017 by Rossi, a resident of Rossland.

The journalist-turned-entrepreneur has since grown the business with her best friend, Kyla Girling, providing employment for three more women. While their services are delivered remotely across Canada and even to some international clients, the team primarily works with Kootenay and Lower Mainland clients.

“We are privileged to work with incredible clients who have helped shape us into the company we are today,” says Rossi.

“With their trust and feedback, we’ve expanded the scope of our business to provide even more services. We love our communities, which is evident in our writing, and instrumental in providing the quality of service our clients have come to appreciate and expect.”

With up to $40,000 in prize money available, Rossi is rallying her community to show their support for small businesses. In the 20 years that SBBC has facilitated these awards, over 6,000 small businesses from across BC have been nominated.

There’s still time to nominate and vote for your favourite business with the contest running until March 10, 2023. To cast your vote, visit https://smallbusinessbc.ca/awards/
