A December to Remember: Castlegar Celebrates the Season with Community Events

The City of Castlegar is excited to announce a series of festive events for the community this holiday season, including the return of the popular Winter Wonderland, the Merry & Bright Holiday Decoration Contest, and a free holiday movie screening at Kootenay Centre Cinemas.
Winter Wonderland – Saturday, December 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Winter Wonderland is a free, family-friendly event presented in partnership between the City of Castlegar, Trowelex, the Castlegar Rotary Club, the Castlegar Sunrise Rotary Club, and the Castlegar Rotary Interact Club.
This year’s event will feature:
- Crafts and Activities: Free craft stations hosted by local sponsors.
- Entertainment: Enjoy live music and Storytime.
- Food and Refreshments: Warm up with complimentary hot dogs, nachos, s’mores, hot chocolate, and non-alcoholic mulled wine.
- Special appearance by Santa Claus in City Hall starting at noon.
Shuttle Service
A shuttle service sponsored by Kootenay Charters Ltd. will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., transporting people between the Castlegar & District Community Complex, starting at 10:30 a.m., with drop-off behind city hall. The last bus will leave around 2:30 p.m. from City Hall and return to the complex. The shuttle will run approximately every 30 minutes.
Free Holiday Movie Screenings – Saturday, December 6
The Kootenay Centre Cinemas will host free holiday movie screenings as part of the festivities. These screenings are sponsored in part by the City of Castlegar.
- The Grinch (2018): Showtimes at 9:00 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Doors will open at 8:30 a.m., and free tickets will be available on the day of the event only. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early to secure your seats and kick off the holiday season with a festive movie experience. After the movie, please join us for more holiday fun at Winter Wonderland! Merry & Bright Holiday Decoration Contest
The Merry & Bright Holiday Decoration Contest invites residents to showcase their creative holiday displays in partnership with Castlegar News and FortisBC. Judges will tour the city after dark on Saturday, December 20, and select the top displays based on creativity and festive spirit.
- To Enter: Send an email to info@castlegar.ca to let us know you want your home added to the map.
- Prizes: The first and second-place winners of the two categories will share over $1,000 in gift certificates to local businesses.
- Announcement: The winners will be announced in the Christmas edition of the Castlegar News.
