Besides being our Member of Parliament, Richard Cannings is a biologist and a birder – and he’ll be talking about birds at the Museum on April 17th, at 6:30. Here’s what the notice from the good people at the Rossland Museum and Discovery Centre says:

Here’s an interesting bit of the Museum’s history: it was first established by the Rossland Rotary Club in the basement of the Rossland Court House in 1954, as the Rossland Historical Museum & Archives Association, and was incorporated under the BC Societies Act in March of 1955. The present museum was built on the site of the Black Bear Mine in 1967 as a Canadian Centennial project.

Two jobs are available now: one for the West Kootenay EcoSociety, and one for the City of Rossland.
The EcoSociety is looking for a Communications Coordinator, and the position is described on the website as “a 0.8 FTE (30 hrs/wk) position that may extend to 40 hrs/wk dependent on funding. The position is based out of West Kootenay EcoSociety’s newest office, opening soon in Trail, BC, but may be required to work out of EcoSociety’s Nelson office occasionally. This position involves some regional travel and some work on evening and weekends. This salary for this position is $39,000-$42,000 pro-rated, depending on experience. The initial contract for this position is ending December 31, 2019 and will be renewed depending on funding. The ideal candidate would be able to start in April.”

The City of Rossland wants to hire a summer student to work in the Public Works department. Here’s some of the information on the job, copied from the website:
“The City of Rossland is accepting applications from students seeking summer employment. This is a CUPE 2087 Summer Student Job paying a rate of $16.00 /hr, Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm (40 hours a week). Applicants must be high school graduates and registered to attend a college or university in the fall and possess a valid B.C. Driver’s License with clean abstract. The successful applicant will be expected to perform routine park maintenance duties such as weeding and garbage clean up, operate minor equipment like lawnmowers and weed whackers and other assigned duties such as painting and assisting other staff.”

Cleaning up! Local teacher Jess Foster at RSS has an Environmental Stewardship class, who are doing community service works on Friday afternoons. She says, “If you see youth out there picking up garbage or poop, sweeping, tidying public areas, please give them a high-five, a smile or encouragement.”
We say, give all that and a bunch of gratitude too. And then please do your best to ensure that there won’t be so much doggie poop and garbage out there that needs to be picked up.
