UPDATED: City continues water quality advisory for Lakeside Rotary Park Beach
Despite a reduction in E.coli levels taken from water samples taken at Lakeside Rotary Park beach area, the City of Nelson said a water quality advisory remains in effect and th area is not suitable for swimming.
“Unfortunately, the E.coli levels remain higher than acceptable and we need to advise residents that the water quality is not suitable for swimming” said Director of Public Works & Utilities Colin Innes.
“It is normal for there to be some fluctuations of increased E.coli levels during the month of August but these fluctuations are normally of a short duration,” Innes added.
Innes said that the City will be completing additional testing to try to determine why the levels of E.coli remain elevated at Lakeside Park and will continue to update residents on the testing outcomes.
Questions regarding the E.coli testing can be answered by calling Public Works Department at (250) 352-8238.
City issues water quality advisory for Lakeside Rotary Park
City of Nelson staff has issued a water quality advisory at Lakeside Rotary Park due to an increase in E. Coli levels.
The advisory, issued Tuesday, suggests the public not swim in Kootenay Lake at Lakeside Park beach as City staff is reporting an increase in E.Coli levels at the swimming area on Kootenay Lake.
“It is suspected the increase in E.Coli is a result of geese feces in the water,” said Ginger Lester, Communications Coordinator with the City of Nelson.
“The City will be re-sampling the water on Friday, August 12th and will advise residents should there be a change in the E.Coli readings.”
Lester said the City anticipates the higher than normal E.Coli readings to be temporary.
