SHSS to remain closed on Friday

The clean-up due to the fire in one of the main floor bathrooms at Stanley Humphries Secondary School continues. We had a crew in the building Wednesday and today but unfortunately more deep cleaning remains.  While we have made good progress on the bathroom itself and the smell of smoke throughout the school has lessened, we still need to clean the air ducts in the immediate area before we can turn the heating and ventilation system back on.

We have decided to keep Stanley Humphries Secondary School closed to students and staff on Feb. 13. SHSS students should not show up at the school on Friday or take the bus in. The school will remained locked in order to secure all of the materials within it and to ensure we can proceed promptly with the clean-up. At this time, should any student have any critical items that absolutely need to be picked up prior to the school reopening please assemble in the front parking lot on Friday between 2 and 3pm.  No one will be allowed to enter the school except for district staff members who will be there to enter the building and pick up the specific, critical item.

The senior girls’ basketball tournament originally scheduled for SHSS this weekend will now move physical locations and be held at J Lloyd Crowe Secondary school in Trail. Thanks Mr. Mason for making alternate arrangements so the tournament can continue.

Monday February 16th at SHSS was scheduled to be a late start, ‘collaboration Monday’ schedule but it will now be a regular scheduled day if we are open on Monday.

We will make the decision regarding the reopening of Stanley Humphries late on Sunday afternoon.  For further information please check your email or the district website www.sd20.bc.ca.

Sincerely,

Greg Luterbach

Superintendent of Schools
