Nelson snares part of $91 million grant to local services and safety
The City of Nelson took home over $500,000 as the Province handed out its second installment of the Strategic Community Investment Fund (SCIF) — part of a total of $91 million province-wide.
The investment includes advance payments of Small Community and Regional District Grants and the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program.
A first installment was paid to communities in March of this year and future instalments are planned for June 2012 and June 2013.
In all, Nelson received $357,639 in small community grants and $145,217 in traffic fine revenue for a total of $502,856. Castlegar had a total of $430,542 and Trail came in at $473,260. The Regional District of Central Kootenay received $121,787 in small community grants.
The Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program assists eligible municipalities that pay police enforcement costs directly.
The grants come from ticket fines and court-imposed fines on violation tickets, and the amount of money a municipality receives is based on its contribution to total municipal policing costs.
The Small Community and Regional District Grants are unconditional grants to local governments, to assist them in providing basic services. Grant amounts are based on a formula that factors in a base amount, population and assessment values.
