Rossland Neighbourhoods of Learning project update

The Rossland Neighbourhoods of Learning committee recently submitted a proposal to the Board of Education for School District # 20. The proposal outlines a vision for changing educational paradigms across the District, and two scenarios for educational configurations in Rossland. It is hoped that this proposal will be considered by the Board as they move forward with facilities planning in the District.

While one of the proposed scenarios focuses on the concept of Neighbourhood Learning Centre space within RSS, the other looks at the feasibility and opportunity associated with K-12 in one school building in Rossland. These scenarios were developed through extensive community consultations, a community survey, meetings with stakeholders, discussions with School District staff, and shared knowledge from other Districts across the province.

The committee would like the opportunity to present the proposed scenarios to the community, so there is a community forum on education planned for Tuesday, March 1 from 6:30 – 8:00pm in the RSS gymnasium. The Girl Guides and Pathfinders will be providing child care for $5 per child. Part of the evening will also include presentations from representatives of successful K-12 schools, and opportunities for active discussion around the exciting opportunities that could arise from housing K-12 students in one building in our community.

On the following evening, Wednesday, March 2, School District # 20 will be holding a Planning for the Future – Community Focus Group Meeting in Rossland in the RSS gymnasium at 6:30pm. This meeting will also be very important to attend in order to provide the School District with your feedback and ideas around education in our area.
