About the Author

Terry Nelson has an innate interest in maps, mountains, geology, natural history, photography and storytelling. He’s been exploring the backcountry around his home in Fernie, BC for many years, which has evolved specifically to seeking out big tree sites throughout BC’s interior. He’s always been in the habit of scribing in detail, accounts of these experiences in journals filled with insights, inspirations, and facts learned along the way. This, combined with his love of wilderness and photography, eventually led to the publication of two field guides “ Fernie Area Hiking Trails and Natural Plant Compendium” in 2018 and “Big Trees of Inland the Temperate Forests of BC” in 2022.

Terry and his wife Laura feel very fortunate to live in Fernie BC where they’ve raised their sons Ryland and Luke who share their conservation ethic and love for the wilderness. Terry is an avid gardener who enjoys hiking, mountain biking, and skiing. In his idle time he can be found reading from a growing library of tree based books.

Neighbours United is a non-profit community-driven organization that brings together local residents to protect the natural environment while building just, equitable, healthy, and livable communities.
