Health warning issued for mushrooms sold in Harrop due to possible misidentification
Interior Health’s Medical Health Officer is advising Harrop and area residents not to consume mushrooms sold at the Harrop Community Hall on Sept. 20, 2026.
The BC Drug and Poison Information Centre has reviewed and identifies the mushrooms as potentially toxic.
If you purchased these mushrooms:
- Do not consume them
- Please dispose of them, immediately
The mushrooms have been tentatively identified as Paxillus involutus , also known as brown roll-rim or common roll-rim mushrooms, which, if ingested, can cause severe health outcomes. Symptoms generally start within two hours of ingestion and include nausea, vomiting, dark coloured urine and diarrhea. If you have already consumed them or are experiencing symptoms, please seek medical attention right away. The public can also phone the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre at 1-800-567-8911 for advice.
There are no known reports of illness at this time.
Interior Health is working to contact individuals who may have purchased the mushrooms and will provide further information as needed.
People in the community who need life-threatening emergency care (i.e., chest pains, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding) should always call 911 for transport to the nearest available and appropriate facility.
