A fire Sunday morning has caused significant damage to three downtown businesses in Rossland, according to Kootenay Boundary Fire Regional Fire Rescue Deputy Fire Chief Glen Gallimore.

He said the call came in at 6:13 a.m. and fire crews were on scene at the 1900 Block of Rossland Avenue by 6: 25 a.m., including 10 firefighters from Rossland, nine from Trail and two from Warfield.

“Upon arrival, crews identified a localized fire within the building and promptly initiated suppression efforts,” he said, adding the fire was in Mountain Nugget Chocolate Co., adjacent to a liquor store and a dental hygienist. “Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly, limiting damage to the immediate area and preventing significant impact to the remainder of the structure.

“Crews also ensured there was no extension to nearby properties,” Gallimore said, but added there is heavy smoke damage to all three businesses and products, as well as extensive fire and water damage to the chocolate shop. No one was in the building at the time.

The incident was under control by 6:52 p.m.

Gallimore said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but doesn’t appear to be suspicious.
