Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue (KBRFR) is launching its 2026 Paid-on-Call Firefighter Recruitment Drive starting June 1, 2026, calling on residents in Trail, Rossland, Warfield, Montrose, Fruitvale and Genelle to step up and help protect their communities.
Becoming a Paid-on-Call Firefighter with KBRFR is a rewarding opportunity to give back and serve your community, develop valuable skills, and make a meaningful difference during emergencies. It seeks dedicated, community-minded individuals who are committed to teamwork, public service, and helping keep the region safe.
KBRFR offers competitive compensation, comprehensive training, and the opportunity to work alongside a skilled and supportive team. Effective January 1, 2026, Paid-on-Call firefighters earn $21.32 per hour during probation and $26.65 per hour once fully certified, with higher rates available for Lieutenants and Captains.
Recruitment remains a priority across all service areas as emergency call volumes and service demands continue to grow throughout the region. Reinforcing the importance of maintaining strong staffing levels at all its Paid-on Call fire stations to ensure a timely emergency response and dependable fire protection for its communities.
These numbers reflect the increasing demand being placed on emergency services throughout our region,” said Dan Derby, Fire Chief KBRFR. “Our fire service depends on dedicated community members who are willing to step up and serve. Recruitment and retention continue to be a challenge across the country, and maintaining strong Paid-on-Call firefighter membership in every community is critical to ensuring local fire stations remain operational and residents and businesses continue to receive the emergency response services they rely on.”
KBRFR has already seen strong momentum in 2025 with the success of last year’s recruit class, highlighting the growing interest in Paid-on-Call firefighting and the importance of continued recruitment efforts across the region. A key part of that success has been the Regional Fire Training Centre in Trail, which provides local firefighters with access to modern, hands-on training close to home. The purpose-built facility allows recruits and experienced members alike to train in realistic emergency scenarios using specialized props and practical exercises that reflect the demands of today’s fire service.
The training centre has become an important regional asset, helping members build confidence, strengthen skills, and maintain operational readiness while supporting consistent training standards across all departments.
“Paid-on-Call firefighters play a vital role in protecting our communities,” added Deputy Chief Glen Gallamore. “We’re encouraging residents who want to give back, learn valuable skills, and be part of a strong team to consider applying to one of the halls in their community.”
