BCNDP MLAs Steve Morissette and Brittny Anderson say that provincial funding being distributed to local governments, regional districts, and First Nations across the province, including in the Kootenays, will support emergency support services, making sure people who are displaced and impacted in emergencies can access the support they need.

“Whether its firefighters working to protect our homes and forests or 911 dispatchers responding to people in crisis, our emergency service professionals are ensuring British Columbians get the help they need,” said Brittny Anderson, MLA for Kootenay-Central. “These dedicated individuals are especially important in rural communities like the Kootenays, and I am so thankful for all they do to keep us safe.”

The Central Kootenay Regional District is receiving $220,195 for training, volunteer recruitment and group lodging equipment

“Rural communities in B.C. know just how vital emergency services are,” said Steve Morissette, MLA for Kootenay-Monashee. “Today and everyday I’m so thankful to the hardworking individuals who keep British Columbians safe here in my riding and across our province.”

This funding, from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness’ Community Emergency Preparedness Fund, is investing nearly $2.5 million to support 54 projects in almost 90 communities in British Columbia.

This will support Governments and Nations to strengthen their Emergency Support Services to help people when they need it most, through training and recruiting volunteers, improving equipment, and accessing supplies like overnight kits for evacuees.
