On Oct. 1, 2025, at 11:40 a.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report that a 36-year-old Trail man with special needs was missing in the 300 block of Schofield Highway in Warfield, according to RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“A support worker was driving in a vehicle with the man when the man allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and fled,” Wicentowich said.

The support worker reported the man missing to the Trail Detachment. The investigating officer contacted the support worker and learned  the man had been located and returned to a care home.

He said a second report was made to another RCMP officer a short while later.

“This officer learned that the 36-year-old Warfield man had entered a local elementary school through a door left temporary unsecure by a third-party employee working on a construction project at the school. The man was located in the school gymnasium by a teacher,” Wicentowich said. “When approached by the teacher, the man grabbed the teacher’s hair and pulled it. The teacher, assisted by another, freed herself. The teacher may have suffered minor Injuries from the assault.  The incident was managed by the school staff until the man was returned to his support worker who had located without police assistance.”

The assault was reported to the Trail RCMP after the incident had resolved. Trail RCMP is now conducting a full investigation.

Trail Victim Services has been engaged and is available to support anyone affected by this incident.

“There are safety issues to consider that arose from this matter. The investigating officer is speaking with all involved parties to develop a joint safety plan and discuss best practices to avoid a future incident,” Wicentowich said.
