Organizer Tammy Maclean says, “The highlight of the race, for me, is the kids 1km race.  Rossland kids start their athletic journey at a very young age and it is common to see 2 year olds entering in the 1km race (with their parents of course – the kids are incredibly determined to reach the finish line. There are also 3km, 5km and 10km categories.  The trails that are used for the race take people up and around the summit of KC, winding on sections of Techo Grind, Eddy J, Milky Way, and Southern Cross, for example.  This year the courses are modified due to the construction at the Centennial Trail.

“Putting on this community race takes a small army of volunteers for timing, course marshalling, course set up and take down, registration.  The organizing committee, consisting of parents and supporters from Black Jack start meeting in the spring to ensure a quality race in the fall.

“Proceeds from the race go to support the Black Jack Skier Development Program which supports children and youth from Bunnies (ages 4 years of age) all the way to National Team Skiers, some of which have gone on to represent Canada at the Olympics.”

Skier Development Coordinator, Helen Clugston, says “While the Golden City Grind is a family fun race, it is called ‘The Grind’ for a reason.  The courses will get your heart pumping and it is for a great cause.  The kids particularly enjoy receiving their chocolate medals.”

The weather forecast predicts a lovely day on  Sunday – not too hot, not too cold, hardly any chance of rain; just a perfect day for the Golden City Grind.
