Local hero: Fred Bushell honoured

Fred Bushell has been recognized with the Distinguished Volunteer Award for his decades of unwavering service to the cross-country skiing community in Rossland, BC. Since taking over his coaching role at Black Jack Ski Club in 1995, Fred has dedicated himself to mentoring young athletes, shaping their technical skills while instilling a lifelong love for the sport. His influence extends beyond coaching, he has led exchange programs, organized training camps, and supported racing events at local, provincial, and national levels. His selfless commitment to fostering a strong ski culture has profoundly impacted generations of skiers, making him an irreplaceable figure in the community. “Fred has been involved in the development of National Team athletes and, just as important, he has instilled a love of skiing in several generations of children.” Jake Weaver.

Fred’s dedication goes far beyond simply showing up; he embodies the spirit of volunteerism in every aspect of his work. Whether meticulously grooming trails, driving athletes across BC for competitions, or ensuring everyone is warmed up and ready on race day, he is always at the heart of the action. His coaching philosophy prioritizes inclusion and personal growth, treating every skier as if they were his own. “Fred’s willingness to put in extra time and effort for his athletes, always making sure to give them a smile and high five at the finish line, and his welcoming and supportive team approach have been supporting the ski program at Black-Jack Ski Club and beyond.” Natalie Nowicki.

His presence at races is invaluable, providing unwavering support to athletes. “Fred has been an incredible support for the Zone 1 athletes who have attended the BC Winter Games. Many of those athletes have gone on to accomplish higher-level accolades in their sporting career, and Fred has helped to support and shape many a cross-country ski athlete as they progress.” Nancy Beaumont.
His ability to instill confidence in young athletes is unparalleled. “Fred helps them to know that they can do hard things having confidence in them that sometimes they do not show themselves.” Natalie Nowicki.

His commitment to the sport has remained steadfast throughout the years, with his volunteer efforts extending from September through March and continuing with summer programming. Even as he nears 70, Fred continues to dedicate countless hours to the ski community, mentoring athletes, organizing training camps, and ensuring every skier he works with feels encouraged and valued. “Fred is quiet by nature and he would never blow his own horn. He just quietly carries on, making a difference in young people’s lives year after year. He embodies the spirit of volunteering in cross-country skiing.” Jake Weaver.
His passion leaves a lasting impact: “Because of Fred, I will love skiing for the rest of my life, and I will count myself lucky if I am able to give back to the community even a shred of the amount Fred has over the course of his involvement in Canadian skiing.” Rémi Drolet.

Fred’s extraordinary commitment, boundless energy, and lasting influence on the ski community make him more than deserving of this prestigious recognition. “His selflessness and team-first mentality inspire fellow volunteers and athletes alike, making him a role model for our community.” Chris Manhard.
His legacy will continue through the generations of skiers and coaches he has mentored, instilling a love for the sport that will endure long beyond his years. “For anyone who has had the pleasure of working with Fred as a coach, friend, mentor or athlete, consider yourself lucky. Fred was nominated by a retired athlete who first met him at the age of eleven while attending a dryland camp in Rossland, growing up in Kimberley, BC she saw Fred at races and camps before finishing her competitive skiing career with Black Jack. After retiring from racing, Fred encouraged her to start coaching Track Attack, sparking a passion that led to six years of coaching. Looking back, she credits Fred for instilling in her a love for coaching after witnessing his incredible dedication to athletes of all levels.
Her first encounter with Fred left a lasting impression. “When I first met Fred, I was new to skiing, and I was a bit nervous about going to an out-of-town camp. But within five minutes of arriving, I was greeted with his warm smile and laughter, and all of those nerves had gone away.” Nicole Perrin.
His kindness and encouragement helped shape her experience both as an athlete and as a coach, highlighting the profound impact Fred has had on generations of skiers.
