Police officer injured after cruisers rammed by suspect in stolen truck

A Trail man is being held in custody after the suspect, driving a stolen truck, collided with police vehicles and an officer, at a road block on Highway 6 Tuesday afternoon.
“This was a highly dangerous and volatile situation, and we’re thankful no member of the public was harmed by this man’s reckless behavior,” says Cpl. James Grandy, BC RCMP spokesperson.
The incident began Tuesday, January 9th at 1:30 p.m. when an officer spotted the stolen Toyota Tundra in Salmo.
RCMP said the officer attempted to stop the vehicle on Railway Street in Salmo, but the suspect immediately fled toward Nelson at a high speed.
RCMP said due to public safety concerns, the officer did not pursue.
RCMP said multiple officers set up a roadblock between Salmo and Nelson in an attempt to stop the suspect’s vehicle.
As officers attempted to use a spike belt, RCMP said several civilian vehicles accidentally drove over the device, resulting in damage, however there were no injuries.
RCMP said the suspect vehicle was later found abandoned near the Nordic Ski Club.
Police said officers, with help from a civilian and his snowmobile, were successful in locating and arresting the suspect.
RCMP said the officer struck by the suspect’s vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from hospital.
RCMP said the 42-year-old Trail man, facing several charges, including assaulting a police officer, remains custody pending a bail hearing.
