Grade 4 field trip celebrates Public Works Day
The City of Rossland is offering an upcoming field trip to the Grade 4 students at RSS and Ecole des Sept-sommets. The goal of the field trip is to educate the students about what happens at Public Works, on the hope that the students then go home and implement their learning into their day to day lives for example what to flush and what not to flush…
The event will be happening on Friday June 17, everyone is meeting at the Public Works Yard at 1 p.m. – they are expecting approximately 65 students plus teachers (54 from RSS and 14 from ESS)
The kids will be split into groups (nine -10 per group) and there will be approximately 10 stations set up.
Each station will show a different aspect of what the Public Works department does, and the presentation will be approximately seven -10 minutes per station.
Example of Stations:
- Fire Hydrant Maintenance;
- Horticulture – Planting Flowers/Plants;
- Fleet Maintenance;
- GIS Mapping System;
- Wastewater Treatment – what happens when you flush;
- Water Distribution System;
- Water Conservation.
There will be a competition “Name the Plow” The kids will be asked to write their suggestions down, and a winner will be chosen by the organizing committee. The winning name will be made into a sticker for the snow plow and the winner and will get a photo taken with the plow and their own sticker.
The whole event will take just over an hour and be wrapped up around 2.15 p.m.
“We are excited to offer this to the students and are hoping to make it an annual event in the future.”
