Missing Rossland hiker found deceased on Gimli Mountain

A Rossland man was reported overdue when he failed to return on Monday, August 26, from a solo hike on Gimli Mountain. He was located deceased the following day.
The 28-year-old Rossland man who is described as an experienced hiker, departed alone for a hike at Gimli Mountain west of Slocan Lake on the morning of August 26th. He was supposed to return by 7 p.m. but never contacted his friends, who subsequently filed a missing person report to South Slocan RCMP.
RCMP activated the Kaslo Search and Rescue Team who worked throughout the evening with several personnel and search dogs. The man’s body was discovered the next day by Search and Rescue and appeared to have suffered a substantial fall of approximately 260 meters.
A SAR helicopter was brought in to recover the body for RCMP and the Coroner. No criminal cause is suspected in his sudden death at this time, and the BC Coroners Service is also investigating. Police have been in contact with the family who reside in Ontario.
“The RCMP would like to recognize the excellent efforts of the Kaslo Search and Rescue team for their determination and professionalism during this difficult recovery,” said RCMP A/Sgt Brett Turner.
“The investigation is ongoing and police are speaking to other hikers who were in the area at the time.”
