The Castlegar Fire Department responded to a structure fire Monday in the 100 block of 9 Avenue, according to Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio.

“The CFD confirmed the call at 10:50 a.m. and arrived on scene at 10:58 a.m.,” he said in a press release issued Monday evening. “(The) CFD responded with 10 firefighters, two Engines, Ladder 1 and Command 1.”

He said the fire was quickly contained and was under control at 11:12 a.m., and completely extinguished at 11:20 a.m.

“There was one occupant home at the time who sustained smoke inhalation and was transported by BCAS to hospital,” Lattanzio said. “There were also three pets in the home, with one dog escaping on its own. One cat and another dog were rescued by firefighters. (The) CFD deployed their PET O2 equipment and successfully resuscitated a dog. The lone occupant was alerted by a working smoke alarm.

“One fire fighter sustained minor injuries, was transported by BCAS to hospital for observation and later released.”
