The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary has pre-positioned 90,000 sandbags across the region that are now available to residents at greatest risk of flooding.

Residents who are at risk of flooding should stay informed about local conditions, ensure they have developed a personal and family emergency plan that includes plans for moving valuable items, livestock or other items to safe locations.

It is the homeowner’s responsibility to undertake temporary and permanent flood protection works to protect their home and property.

Several local volunteer groups have already formed in Grand Forks to assist local residents to obtain sandbags and to sandbag their property if necessary. The Kettle River Watershed Authority will connect local residents with volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering or who needs help with sandbagging can contact KRWA at 250-442-4111 or plan@kettleriver.ca.

Sand is available to fill sandbags at three Grand Forks locations:

·       Grand Forks Arena (Jack Goddard Memorial Arena) at 2020 Central Avenue

·       Grand Forks Airport, 5980 2nd Street

·       The Nursery Fire Hall, 490 Starchuk Road

When river levels warrant a move to the next stage of flood response, the EOC may have sand available to residents in more locations.

The RDKB will continue to provide regular public updates in the coming days.
