Drive BC is now anticipating that a stretch of Hwy 3A between Castlegar and Nelson which was closed by a mudslide will be re-opened to single-lane traffic between 8 and 11 p.m. this evening. The  site also indicated that the geotechnical survey is complete, and clean up is underway. See below for detour routes in the interim.

Previous coverage:

Drive BC is reporting the closure of Highway 3A between Castlegar and Nelson/Creston in both directions, 2 km east of Brilliant due to a mudslide.

The site says, “assessment in progress”, and reports no estimated time of opening.

Light vehicles are being detoured through Pass Creek Road, while commercial vehicles are detouring via Hwy 3 over the Bombi Pass.

The RDCK has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to support all agencies involved and is working alongside the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) and geotechnical engineers to assess the situation. Information from the assessment will be used to determine if further action, such as an evacuation, is needed.
