Busy week for NPD, investigation continues after knife used in fight

Transient campers, impaired drivers as well as an increase in people consuming alcohol and drugs in the downtown core kept police busy during the past week said a Nelson Police Department media release Thursday.
“Nelson Police Department has noted an increase in calls for service regarding transient camping within the city and debris being left behind by individuals sleeping outdoors,” the release said.
“(As well there was) an increase in impaired driving by both alcohol and drug in recent days causing some individuals to have their vehicles seized and their driver’s licenses suspended,” the release added.
Police investigate knife fight in downtown
In the early hours of Wednesday, NPD were called after report a knife was used in a fight in the downtown core.
NPD said the call came in at approximately 2:32 a.m. from a local downtown business to deal with fight in progress involving a knife.
“Upon police arrival, one male was located nearby suffering from a laceration,” the release said.
“The male was transported to a local hospital for treatment and subsequently released.”

NPD deals with afternoon fist-fight on Ward Street
Nelson Police were quick to respond to call of a fight in progress Wednesday at 4:26 p.m. in the 300 block of Ward Street.
“Upon police arrival, both parties involved were determined to be intoxicated,” the release said.
NPD said both males admitted to being in a consensual fight and no criminal charges are being sought in this matter.
Man suffers panic attack
Wednesday at 3:36 a.m., NPD dispatch had a male attend headquarters suffering from a mental crisis.
The man approached staff in an aggressive manner and fled when before officers could deal with the incident.
“The male ran to the downtown core and was subsequently taken into custody after damaging a Nelson Police Department police vehicle,” the NPD release said.
NPD said the male was transported to a local hospital for a mental health assessment. The investigation continues.
