Residents and visitors within the area between Rusty Creek and Cascade Creek along Highway 31 (see map) 30 kilometers northwest of Lardeau in the north end of Kootenay Lake are being placed on an Evacuation Alert said the Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operation Centre in a media release Sunday evening.

The RDCK EOC said the active Rapid Creek Fire, listed at 34 hectares in size, is displaying increased activity as the northwest winds are pushing it out into the face of the hill.  The wildfire, caused by lightning, was spotted in the Goat Range Provincial Park Monday, July 24.

“With continued hot, dry conditions and forecasted winds, there is the potential of putting Highway 31 and Poplar Creek at risk,” the media release said.

“Residents in the area have been notified of an Evacuation Alert and are asked to be prepared in the event of a full evacuation.   A door to door evacuation will be performed should the fire pose threat to lives or infrastructure.”

The Evacuation Alert is for residents between 16340 and 16471 on Highway 31 between Lardeau and Trout Lake.

The Southeast Fire Centre crews are monitoring the fire several times daily and are developing control strategies as the fire progresses. Bombers were seen heading from Castlegar along Kootenay Lake over Nelson en route to the wildfire Sunday evening.

“At this time resources are limited due to the current state of emergency in the province.”
