Head-on collision near Genelle claims life of local woman
Investigators with the Trail and Greater District RCMP and West Kootenay Traffic Services attended a fatal collision on Hwy 22 near Genelle this past Tuesday.
On June 13 at 3:20 p.m. the Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report of a head-on collision on Highway 22 near Genelle. Upon attending the location, investigators determined that a northbound 2010 grey Toyota Yaris crossed the center line over into the southbound lanes and struck a southbound 2002 red Subaru Impreza.
The grey Toyota was being driven by a 26-year-old Fruitvale man, who was accompanied by a 46-year-woman from Trail. The female passenger was critically injured and later succumbed to her injuries. A 72-year-old female from Trail was the lone occupant of the southbound red Subaru and sustained serious injuries as well.
RCMP investigators with the West Kootenay Traffic and Trail and Greater District RCMP in conjunction with the BC Coroner’s Service will be working together to determine the cause of the collision and whether or not charges will be recommended.
On June 14, while completing the scene investigation of this crash, a police officer was nearly struck by a male driver who drove over the traffic safety cones at the collision scene. He did not hold a driver’s license and was found to be under the influence of drugs. That male was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and documentation in relation to his driver’s license status.
