Merchants of Doubt documentary to screen in Castlegar

The Castlegar community has the opportunity this week to view the eye-opening and entertaining documentary film Merchants of Doubt. The film will be shown on March 16 at 7 p.m. at the Castlegar United Church (809 Merry Creek Rd.). Admission is by donation.
Merchants of Doubt exposes the campaign to confuse the public and discredit climate science.
Directed by award-winning documentarian Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.), the film investigates the shadowy world of professional skeptics, “experts” for hire, whose services are bought and paid for by corporations and think tanks to cast doubt on climate change.
“In this era of misinformation and ‘alternative’ facts, it is crucial to understand how we can be manipulated, and consider ways of joining together to empower each other as concerned citizens,” says Laura Sacks, who leads the local chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby.
Following the screening, the audience can further engage with the film, with leadership from the Castlegar Centre for Contemplation and Justice.
“We want to explore how to process the content in ways that go beyond cynicism and despair,” says Greg Powell, minister of the Castlegar United Church and founding member of the Centre for Contemplation and Justice.
The film is brought to the community by Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a non-partisan organization which creates the political will for a livable world by empowering individuals to experience breakthroughs in exercising their personal and political power. The event is co-sponsored by the Castlegar United Church, Castlegar Centre for Contemplation and Justice, Castlegar Citizens Concerned about the Climate Crisis, and the West Kootenay EcoSociety.
