Columbia River Skywalk, one of the largest suspension bridges in North America, was the location of a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 15.

“The genesis of the project was the closure of the old Trail Bridge in 2011 when it was deemed unsafe,” said city councillor Kevin Jolly.

“Identifying the bridge with a name is a fundamental contribution to this project,” added Jolly.

On March 16 of this year, City of Trail released the following update: “Columbia River Skyway is the name that has been selected for the pipeline/pedestrian bridge that is currently being constructed and will span the Columbia River from Rotary Park (west) to McQuarrie Street (east).”

Location was a key factor in the design, Jolly added.

“The location was selected for proximity to the existing sewer force main, as well as relocation of new regional sewer interceptor line from closed bridge.”

“The new interceptor line is a joint regional partnership between Trail, Rossland and Warfield,” continued Jolly. “It is based on an established regional service agreement through RDKB which is overseen by a committee.”

The City of Trail will host a larger grand opening event during Silver City Days 2017, scheduled for May 10 to 14.
