Local Alzheimer's programming to be available in the New Year

The New Year is fast approaching, and the Alzheimer Society of BC wants Kootenay/Boundary residents to be aware of services that will be available in 2017.

“We will be offering several workshops for families living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in the New Year,” said local support and education coordinator Julie Leffelaar.

Highlights of programming include:

Understanding Dementia – Grand Forks:

Tuesday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. – noon, Boundary District Hospital, 7649 22nd St., Grand Forks

Participants will receive basic information about dementia and the impact this disease has on the individual, caregivers and families. Through an exploration of how dementia affects the brain and behaviour across the progression of the disease, caregivers will learn what to expect throughout the journey with dementia.

Heads Up: An Intro to Brain Health – Castlegar

Tuesday, Mar. 7, from 10 a.m. – noon, Kinnaird Park Church, 1250 26th Ave., Castlegar

Receive basic information about dementia and the impact of receiving a diagnosis. Learn about the different types of support available throughout the dementia journey, including an introduction to programs and services offered by the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Family Caregiver Series – Available in Trail, Grand Forks and Nelson

An education series for family members who are caring for a person with dementia. The Family Caregiver Series covers the following topics: Understanding Dementia, Communication and Behaviour, Planning for the Future and Self-care for Caregivers.
