RCMP is reporting one fatality following a two-car accident Monday morning on Highway 3A west of Nelson near Bonnington.

Sergeant Chad Badry of the RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services said in a media release three people were involved in two vehicle accident that occurred at 8 a.m. and closed the highway for several hours.

Traffic was detoured through the Lower and Upper Bonnington and South Slocan Village roads.

“The driver of one vehicle was air-lifted to Kelowna General Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries,” Badry explained.

“The passenger of the same vehicle was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital, but died from injuries sustained. The driver of the other vehicle sustained serious non-life threatening injuries.”

Badry said the names of the persons are not being released at this time out of respect for the family and until permission has been given.

He said West Kootenay Traffic and BC Coroner’s Service will be working together to determine the cause of the collision.

“We want to remind drivers to adjust their driving according to the conditions,” Badry said.

“This may mean giving yourself extra time to travel, using public transit, leaving extra distance between vehicles, choosing not to drive, and most certainly drive slower.”

The accident scene is approximately 18 kilometers west of Nelson.
