Mount Sentinel Wildcats head back to provincials as eighth seed
It was a should-have, would-have and could-have weekend for the Mount Sentinel Wildcats.
Fernie Falcons rallied from a previous loss to edge the Wildcats 3-1 in the final of the Kootenay High School A Girls Volleyball Championships.
The result means the Cats enter the BC High School A Girl’s Volleyball Championship as the second seed out of the Kootenay zone — eighth overall in the 16-team tourney.
“While we were disappointed with the outcome,” said Mount Sentinel coach Joe Moreira.
“We had defeated Fernie in the final of the Kimberley tournament two weeks ago, but we were generally pleased with our play.”
Mount Sentinel lost to Fernie during round robin play at the 10-team Kootenay tournament.
The Wildcats rebounded in the semi final to defeat Elkford, despite losing the first game 25-23.
“That scared us enough to wake us up,” Moreira confessed. “We went on to comfortably win sets 2/3/4.”
Elkford, finishing third overall, now faces Vernon Christian to determine the final Wild Card berth in the provincial tournament.
Meanwhile, Mount Sentinel heads back to the practice court in preparation for next week’s provincial tourney.
“The best description of our season starts and ends with inconsistency,” Moreira explains.
“It seems that every time we make a little progress, we take a few steps back.”
“We have for example changed our line up every weekend until recently,” he added.
“We cautiously believe that we have figured it out.”
The BC tournament is hosted in Kelowna by Immaculata High School.
In 2015, Mount Sentinel finished seventh overall.
Immaculata is the defending A Girls Champion.
