Calvin Vollrath, internationally acclaimed fiddler, to perform in Castlegar

World-class fiddler Calvin Vollrath will be playing at the Old Castle Theatre in Castlegar on October 24 at 7 PM. If you watched the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, you’ve heard his music. He was commissioned to write, arrange and play five fiddle tunes to share the richness and variety of Canadian fiddling with the world.
This internationally acclaimed musician will provide you with toe-tapping entertainment encompassing a variety of fiddle music genres. Twice crowned the Grand North American Old Tyme Fiddle Champion, and winner of many more awards too numerous to list, he is revered as a performer, composer, and teacher. With more than fifty albums of his own, he is an accomplished television, radio, and studio musician and has recorded with Ian Tyson, Laura Vinson, Colleen Peterson, and played with Natalie MacMaster.
Calvin Vollrath will be accompanied by Western Canada’s premier guitarist Clinton Pelletier, as well as Kimberly Holmes on the twinkling keys. Rhea Labrie will step-dance to some lively music. The Old Time Fiddlers #9, led by Deb Schiavon, will open with memorable fiddle tunes. A portion of proceeds go to benefit the local non-profit society Kootenay Old Time Fiddlers #9, whose mission is to promote, perform and preserve traditional Canadian fiddle music.
About the Kootenay Old Time Fiddlers: This not-for-profit society is a branch of the B.C. Old Time Fiddlers called Kootenay No. 9 and includes members from Castlegar, Fruitvale, Rossland, Trail, and further afield. They formed in Castlegar in 1981 for the purpose of promoting traditional Canadian fiddling. The group includes members who play the fiddle, guitar, keyboard, base, mandolin, banjo, and more. In addition to performing at local events, the volunteers also plan the annual Fiddle Workshop at Selkirk College in Castlegar, BC.
