A lot has changed since Milt and Donna Goddard purchased a small cottage at 10-mile on the North Shore back in 1962.

From travelling highway with fewer twists and turns to residences that have shot up to occupy the tinniest of spots on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake waterfront, the Goddard’s have seen it all from their magnificent homestead just off Highway 3A.

However, after raising their two children, Deb and David, and turning a beat-up patch of land into 5.15 acres of peaceful and serene Kutenai Gardens, Milt and Donna are pulling up stakes and moving to the Central Okanagan.

“We’re definitely going to miss it,” Milt Goddard said after pounding in the For Sale sign.

“I feel this is actually one of the finest pieces of property on Kootenay Lake.”

Donna and Milt Goddard have seen it all during their time at 10-Mile.

When they moved onto the North Shore after being married in 1956 in Port Alberni, traffic was light and the population was few in numbers.

But once people got an itch for the beauty of Kootenay Lake, that all changed.

“The waterfront from Balfour to Nelson is now totally subdivided with houses,” Milt Goddard said.

“And back 62 years ago, my son David was the only child on the school bus for two miles,” Goddard chuckled.

It was back in the early 1960s when Milt and Donna moved to West Kootenays from Vancouver Island.

The couple set their sights on the existing property at 4168 Highway 3A.

However, at the time the owner did not want to sell.

A few months later Donna received a knock on the door where the Goddards were staying next door at Milt’s mother’s place.

Grandma Goddard, who lived on a large farm near Fruitvale, purchased a cottage next door to the current location.

“I was working in Cranbrook at the time and Donna called me and said I’d be interested in the conversation I had with the neighbour,” said Milt, who had a trap line for years up Laska Creek on the south side of Kootenay Lake.

“It just happened to be a bad winter and the guy didn’t want to shovel any more snow, so he said we could have it.”

That was the start of Kutenai Gardens.

Fast-forward to 2016, and the Kutenai Gardens is a gem on the waterfront that offers private panoramic lake views, with mountains nestled in as the backdrop.

The property had 200 feet of lakeshore and sandy beach including a dock and amazing, manicured gardens that is conveniently located 15 kilometers north of the Heritage City and 12 minutes south of the Balfour Ferry Terminal.

The main house is a secluded walkout 3-Storey home with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. There is a second home is a cedar cottage with two bedrooms and two bathrooms as well as a separate two bedroom detached cottage house that sleeps 10.

Did we talk about the magnificent, expansive landscaped garden with ponds and seating areas that have provided the backdrop for numerous weddings through the years?

And the fact the cottages can, and are, rented by tourists during the summer and skiers in the winter months from throughout the world providing extra income?

Each home comes with an abundance of large windows and sprawling exterior deck/patio to optimize the spectacular lake and mountain views.

“It took 30 years to plant grass from the lake to the highway,” Milt Goddard said. “Donna planted every seed.”

“Donna and I have worked hard and planted all the trees that are unique to area on this property . . .. All the trees that can grow in the Kootenays are grown right here.”

Milt Goddard said he’s enjoyed every minute of raising the family on the North Shore and meeting people from Copenhagen to Calgary.

Now it time for someone else you enjoy the beauty and serenity of the property at 4168 Highway 3A.
