IIO BC called in to investigate double fatal police shooting
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been notified to deal with a double fatal police shooting Thursday in the Village of Granisle, which is located north of Topley on the shores of Babine Lake.
RCMP received a call at approximately 12:33 p.m. Thursday (April 21) to a neighbour dispute involving a handgun in the Village of Granisle.
RCMP Staff Sergeant Rob Vermeulen said police arrived at about 1:22 pm and established a perimeter around the subject residence.
“Contact with the residents was attempted,” Vermeulen said in a media report.
“One person exited the residence and confronted police. Shots were fired at about 2:50 pm. The second person exited the residence, confronted police and shots were fired. Both people were attended to by paramedics who were already staged nearby. Both persons are deceased.”
Vermeulen said there were no injuries to police.
“The circumstances, timing and actions of all involved are now subject to an independent investigation,” he added.
Vermeulen said the IIO BC has been notified and the scene and evidence have been secured, with the assistance of resources from North District Major Crime, pending their arrival.
Vermeulen said given that the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information is being released by police at this time.
