The Canadian Cancer Society is inviting snowboarders, alpine and nordic skiers and all people who love to play in the snow to the 4th Annual Slopes for Hope Red Mountain Resort and Black Jack Ski Club event on Saturday, February 21, 2016.  Join us for this family friendly ski-a-thon in which participants attempt to ski or board the vertical distance of Mount Everest in one day (29,029 feet).

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, about half of all cancers can be prevented.  A way to reduce the risk of cancer is by living well which includes being active, eating well, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Skiing and Snowboarding is a great way to stay active during the winter months. It is a great way to get our cancer prevention message out to the community, raise funds to support our mission, and have fun!” says Allison McCarthy, Annual Giving Coordinator for the Society.

Participants can sign up as individuals for a personal challenge, or in teams and split the distance between team members.

2 Everest Challenges — which one will you choose?

Descending Everest (Alpine skiers)- Can you ski the height of Everest? That works out to be 29,029 feet.  Number of Runs on each chair needed to meet the goal:
Red – 1,420 feet – 20.5 runs, Silverlode – 705 feet – 41 runs, Motherlode – 2,332 feet – 12.5 runs, Paradise – 1,286 feet – 23 runs

Everest Trek (Nordic skiers)- 10km Nordic ski challenge at Black Jack Ski Club via using Gibbards Trail and Aqueduct – Roger’s Route.

We ask that participants fundraise in advance to support the Canadian Cancer Society. Funds raised through the event will help the Canadian Cancer Society fund excellence in cancer research, cancer prevention initiatives, and support services such as wig banks, lodges near treatment centres, Cancer Information Service, and Camp Goodtimes for children with cancer and their families. To learn more about what the Canadian Cancer Society does in your community and the services they provide please visit www.cancer.ca.

All participants who raise $100 or more will receive a half price lift ticket at Red Mountain or free day pass at Black Jack Ski Club.  There will be an après-event with entertainment and prizes awarded at the end of the day for both challenges at Red Mountain Resort.

It is your year to take home the coveted Golden Boot Trophy?   Teams are eligible to win the coveted “Golden Boot Trophy”.  Take on the team challenge and become the keeper of the Golden Boot Trophy for an entire year by skiing the most vertical and raising the most funds for the cancer fighting cause.

“This is a great event, and a wonderful way for the ski community to get involved in the fight against cancer. Last year we raised $19,200. Help us meet our goal of raising $25,000 this year in the fight against cancer as we take it to the slopes,” say Dario Cescon and Kim Mercer, volunteer event chairs.
