Skiers beware: that new avalanche danger advisory from Avalanche Canada isn’t just hot air. In case anyone in Rossland isn’t yet aware of the event, three skiers were caught in a small release while skiing near Rossland recently, and one of them went to the hospital with a concussion.
They were skiing on fairly steep terrain with smooth bedrock underlying the snow. Recent fluctuations in temperature added to the risk of a release. Even a small release can result in damage to the human body — even a strong, fit, and well-conditioned one.
Skiers in other areas of the Rossland range have also noticed signs of instability in the snowpack in some places. Be wary of “pocket” hazards.
