Nelson SARS, Balfour Fire rescue injured female after fall near Gibson Lake

Nelson Search and Rescue (NSAR) and Balfour Fire Rescue were called to rescue a woman in her mid 20s after the female experienced a fall on an old growth recreation trail near Gibson Lake Sunday afternoon.
Chris Armstrong of NSAR said in a media release, the two search crews were called into action at 2:30 p.m. Sunday after it was reported to BC Emergency Health Services that a 26-year-old woman sustained major injuries during a fall on a closed section beyond the old growth recreational trail, 10 kilometers up the Kokanee creek road to Gibson Lake.
“(The) female suffered a slip and fall resulting in a head injury and fractured pelvi,” Armstrong said.
“The subject was quickly located and packaged.”
Armstrong said due to severity of injury speed of transport was paramount.
“The location of the incident made egress difficult and required an aerial rope system to cross Kokanee Creek as well as 14 members of NSAR, four firefighters from Balfour Fire/Rescue and two BCEHS paramedics to transport subject by stretcher and wheel to awaiting helicopter for evacuation to hospital,” he explained.
Armstrong said although subject and party were in a closed area of the trail system, they were conducting themselves appropriately and were able to contact emergency services in a timely manner.
“They aided greatly in the quick evacuation of their injured party.”
