A man accused of starting two fires has been arrested and is facing charges, according to Mackenzie RCMP.

“Just after 10 p.m. on Aug. 19, a 20-year-old male was arrested in relation to two fires which appear to have been deliberately set earlier in the evening,” said a press release issued Friday morning.”The fires, set along the John Dahl Trail near the Mackenzie Leisure Center were successfully extinguished by the Mackenzie Fire Service, but not before one fire had grown to over 30 feet.”

The 20-year-old is scheduled to appear later today in court, and expected to face two charges of Arson.

Corporal James Foyle of the Mackenzie RCMP said, “These fires put the community and first responders at risk, and it is troubling that in the height of fire season, with wild fires burning across the province, someone would deliberately set a fire.”

In addition to the fires set on the evening of Aug. 19, two fires set outside Mackenzie near Ganahatz on the evening Aug. 18, remain under investigation.

The RCMP in Mackenzie are asking one with information in regards to
these fires to contact them at 250-997-3288.
