Don Thompson New President of Red Mountain Ventures
Katkov Sets The Stage For The Next 10 Years
Red Mountain Ventures’ CEO Howard Katkov announced significant changes to the leadership team today, including a new President appointed from within the organization and a new Director of Sales.
Don Thompson will become the President of Red Mountain Ventures, parent company of RED Mountain Resort. In his new role Mr. Thompson will oversee all aspects of resort operations, project and property management.
“In 2002, I came to Rossland to check out this mysterious ski hill I’d heard so much about. Don Thompson was the first guy I met. We are now approaching our thirteenth year together as partners in RED Mountain. I can’t be more proud and confident that Don will continue his great work in this well-deserved new position,” says Katkov. While Katkov is stepping aside from his day to day operational duties as President of the resort, he will stay on as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, with a focus on finance, investor relations, development partnerships and sales and marketing.
Katkov adds, “Don and I have realized in the last twelve years that owning and operating RED Mountain is unlike any other job we have had in the past. Our obligations go beyond the fiduciary duties to our shareholders. Our company is forever linked to the growth and sustainability of the community of Rossland and Don will continue to play a key role in that sustainability.”
When asked about his new position, Thompson said: “I look forward to continually increasing and improving our product lines and services. The opportunity to work with the great RED team in this iconic mountain town is truly exceptional. RED is the heart of the Rossland mountain community and our growth together over the past twelve years has been impressive and gratifying. I really like the direction we are heading in the industry and our brand, history and expansion has positioned us for another great run.”
Also joining the leadership team is ski industry veteran Matt Henry, filling the newly created position of Director of Sales. Matt comes from 20 years of experience selling in the winter-sports category and will lead the business development and expansion of sales for Legacy Training Centre and RED Mountain Resort.
“If there’s one lesson that I have learned in my career, it’s that you have to believe in the products you represent in order to sell them effectively,” says Mr. Henry. “For me, RED Mountain Resort and The Legacy Centre are exactly that: Two authentic brands that I am extremely passionate about. I look forward to using my skills and industry knowledge to help steer the continued growth and success of them both.” “We couldn’t be happier welcoming Matt Henry to the RED Mountain team. Matt’s passion for our community, the resort and the industry will pave the way for continued growth and visibility of RED Mountain,” says Katkov.
These leadership team changes take effect immediately and position RED Mountain Ventures for continued growth. Despite below average snowfall in 2014-15, and a challenging season for resorts throughout the West, RED Mountain has been on a major roll these last few years: Setting new occupancy records; developing the new Legacy Training Centre; opening an entire new mountain on Grey; and winning accolades from major press outlets including the NY Times.
RED Mountain Resort
In 2013-14, Red Mountain Resort added nearly 1,000 acres of mostly-intermediate terrain on Grey Mountain, making RED yet more family-friendly and uncrowded. With 300″/7.6m of annual snowfall, wide-open groomed runs, epic vertical (2,919ft/890m!), in-bounds cat-skiing, 360 degree descents off select peaks, a rich tradition, and the best tree runs on earth, it’s no wonder The NY Times voted us their #8 “Best Place in the World to Visit in 2013.” RED’s other recent accolades include #1 in Powder‘s “Ski Town Throwdown,” and “Most Underrated Resort” by Skiing.
