2015 marks the 8th year that the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture hosts the West Kootenay Under19 Film Festival (U19 Film Fest). This year’s event will be held at the Rossland Miners Hall and will be on Saturday, May 2, kicking off the Rossland activities for National Youth Week, May 1-7.

This year the theme of the festival is Favourite Movies: audience members are encouraged to dress up as characters from their own favourite movies. Local participants aged 10-19 years from the West Kootenay area have submitted short films in five categories: non-fiction/documentary, drama, comedy, sports, and action/adventure. The film submissions will be juried by a panel of local youth and adult film makers and prizes will be awarded to the winning entry in each category. By the end of the evening you may just have a new favourite movie, and you can let us know because there are also prizes awarded in the “Judges Choice,” and the highly acclaimed “Peoples’ Choice” categories.

RCAC is proud to be hosting this annual event in partnership with the Rossland Youth Action Network. “This event is dear to RCAC not only because it features an art form that has special appeal to our younger audience but also because this event is driven by the youth and provides a variety of learning opportunities for all the youth involved,” says Tara Kowalchuk, RCAC Executive Administrator. “The youth are involved from the beginning of the planning process and put their own touch on the festival.”

Along with the competing films, we will be screening two special youth made documentaries. There will also be guest speakers, draw prizes, and a piñata bashing! “This is a wonderful, fun event for all ages” says Kowalchuk, “We invite everyone to come view the films and to see the talent we have in our local youth.”

RCAC would like to thank the sponsors who make this event possible: Columbia Power Corporation, Nelson and District Credit Union, and Kootenay Savings Credit Union.

Come out to the Rossland Miners Hall for an entertaining evening and support youth in the arts on Saturday, May 2 at 6:00pm. Admission is only $5.00 and there will be a concession on site. More information can be found at u19filmfest.com.
