Rossland Arena – available ice times this week

Looking to rent ice for a game of hockey or a birthday party or special event? The Rossland Arena has ice available on the following dates and times:

 

Monday, 4:45pm-5:45pm

Wednesday, 9:45-11:00pm

Thursday, 9:45-11:00pm

Friday, 8:30-11:00pm

Saturday, 5:00-7:15pm and 9:00-11:00pm

 

The Lounge is often available at the same time too. Consider booking both the ice and the Lounge for a birthday party or special event. Fees to rent the ice and lounge are quite reasonable. Contact the Rec Department to discuss at 250-362-2327 or recreation@rossland.ca

 

 

Public Skating over the Holidays!

With the Holidays almost upon us, the Public Skating schedule will change a bit. There are also two special Public Skating sessions that we’re encouraging everyone to enjoy – December 22nd from 4:00-5:30pm and Tuesday, December 30th from 5:00-6:30pm. If you don’t have skates you can rent them from the Arena Staff.

Kids Learn to Curl Program for Kids 8-12 years

The Curling Club has introduced a Kids Learn to Curl program! There are two introductory sessions coming up in December so that you can check out the sport – Wednesday, December 10 and Wednesday, December 17, right after school from 2:45-4:00pm. If you like the sport, you can sign up for the session that starts January 7 and runs until March 11. The program runs on Wednesdays, from 2:45-4:00pm at the Rossland Curling Rink. The program is FREE and drop-ins and new participants are welcome at any time during the program. This program is open to kids 8-12 years of age and all you need to bring are a pair of indoor shoes with clean bottoms for wearing on the ice. Apres-Ski” Winter Farmer’s Market

The first event is coming up on Saturday December 13th, from 2:00-7:00PM, downtown at The Miner’s Hall. Come in after an EPIC first day on the hill, get warmed up with some great friends, your favorite vendors, delicious food, wickedly amazing and unique art and some soul-moving local music!! We’re excited to welcome back as season vendors: Earthy Organics, Old Mill Farm, Sweet Dreams Cakery, Kathleen Hill, Kootenay Natural Meats and Paper Garden. Our first time season vendors include: Kristen Renn, Daniel Bremer, Susanna Harrison, and Greenwood Garden Goodies! As well, at the December market, just in time for Christmas, find all of your local gift needs! Candles, paintings, clothing, snow catchers, jewelry, winter woolly gear, handspun and hand dyed yarns and fibers, glass blown art, all kinds of preserved and baked foods, and more!!

 

 

 

RCAC & YAN present – Christmas Fun at the Miners Hall – Sunday, Dec. 14!

On Sunday, December 14 at 2:00pm, the RCAC and the Youth Action Network present a family friendly afternoon of fun! Enjoy Christmas crafts, button making, snowflake decorations, and Ugly Christmas Sweater Design from 2:00-3:30pm. At 3:30pm, enjoy a double feature movie, the cartoon version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas followed by Miracle on 34th Street. This is an all ages event presented in partnership with the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture.  Admission is by donation: bring a non-perishable food item for the Rossland Food Bank or a cash donation can be made to the Rossland Skatepark Association. If you would like to participate in the Ugly Christmas Sweater design please bring a sweater to decorate.

 

Blackjack Cross Country Ski Club

XC Ski Lessons starting December 7 – Ongoing registration! The season is upon us and registration for Cross Country ski lessons is open!! Learning the basics of cross country skiing will open the door to a lifetime of fun and fitness. The Jackrabbits and Track Attack programs offer cross country ski lessons throughout the winter for kids ages 4-15. Winter sessions begin on December 7th and go through March 9th. Please visit the Powderhound in Downtown Rossland to register for lessons – open at 10am daily, 11am on Sundays. Watch out for the Track Attack! The Track Attack Program is intended for children ages 10 – 14. The objective is for participants to become technically competent cross country skiers and to utilize their skills to explore a wide range of cross-country ski activities, from back country excursions to Ski Tournaments. In addition, it is designed to: Develop fitness through active play, games and other activities; Be fun; Provide children an opportunity to be part of a sport “team”; Develop competence in cross country ski skills; Expose children to a variety of “adventure-based” cross country ski activities. This program is offered year-round as well as seasonally and is offered after Jackrabbit 4 level has been achieved with many more training opportunities per month. Rossland Youth Action Network

The Youth Action Network is getting going for its 2014 / 2015 season! Mike Kent has lots of great programs and opportunities to roll out this year and the excitement is just starting! If you are a Youth between the ages of 12 and 18 or you have a Youth in that age bracket, please check out the website at www.rosslandyan.ca or “like” them on Facebook at, www.facebook.com/RosslandYAN. The Youth Action Network guarantees that teenagers in Rossland have “something to do”!

 

The Rossland Makerlab is back!

Starting October 9, drop in and get support in creating 3D Models, printing on the 3D printer and all things technology based. Every Thursday at the Seven Summits Centre for Learning, from 7:00-8:30pm for youth 12-18 yrs old.

 

Parkour & Freerunning

Parkour is the “Art of Movement”. Involvement in Parkour requires consistent, disciplined training with an emphasis on functional strength, physical conditioning, balance, creativity, fluidity, control, precision, spatial awareness, and looking beyond the traditional use of objects. The Parkour program is located in the RSS Auditorium from 7:00-8:30pm. Tuesdays is Pure Parkour for kids ages 8 years and up. Thursdays is Parkour and Freerunning for advanced athletes and you must be invited by an Instructor.

 

Rossland Public Library

The Library has lots of great programs and events running in the next few days, weeks and months! On Fridays at 11:00am the Books and Babies songs and story time happens for little ones 0 to 30 months. Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm there is something going on in the Library for school aged kids. The Page Turners program is for kids 8-11 years old, the second Thursday of each month from 3:00-4:00pm. The Board Games Club for kids 6-12 years runs the fourth Thursday of each month from 3:00-4:00pm

Prenatal and Preschool Programs

  • Prenatal Yoga

This class provides an opportunity to deepen your relationship with your body and baby through gentle yoga postures, breath work and meditation. Dates will be February 1-March 8, 2015 (no class on February 15, 2015) Times are Sundays, 4:00-5:00pm and fees are$75.00 The classes will be held at the Miners Hall.

 

  • Preschool Spanish Class

Introduction to Spanish through songs, games and fun! Join us to take on the melodious and exotic tone of Spanish. Parents take part in the sessions and assist their children. Families who took the first semester class will continue to learn new words and phrases while new families will catch up quickly in this fun and engaging format. Dates and Times: January 15 – March 12, 2015, Thursdays, 10:00-10:45am.

 

  • Preschool French Class

Capturing your children’s interest for language starts here with an introduction to French through songs, games and fun. Parents take part in the sessions and assist their children. Families who took the first semester class will continue to learn new words and phrases while new families will catch up quickly in this fun and engaging format.   • Hip Hop Tots with GrooveCorp

Hip Hop is back! This is a fun, creative movement class with action songs and movements for your tots to get their groove on and develop a love of dance! This is not a drop in class. All dancers will be encouraged to participate in the final dance show. Dates and Times: January 14 – March 4, 2015, Wednesdays, 2:30-3:15pm

  

  • Tumbleweeds: A movement based parent / tot program for children ages Infant to 4 years – designed specifically to encourage children to explore movement through play based activities. Physical strength, flexibility, balance and coordination will be emphasized through the various activities. Each week is structured around a play-based routine including; free play, warm up songs, specialized activities, parachute games and ending with a story. Session #1: November 18-December 16, Tuesdays, 10:30-11:15am at the Miners Hall. Please register with Rossland Rec.

 

Children’s Programs

  • Karate for kids ages 6-14 years has started on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Miners Hall. The class runs from 3:30-5:00pm and the Fall Semester ends towards the end of December.

 

  • Dragon Art Class

Dragons are awesome! So this class is designated to them. We will draw them, sculpt them and animate them. It’s a basic art class where all the art (including drawing, painting, sculpting and printmaking) will be based around dragons of their choice. Come out and enjoy dragons! Dates and Times: January 14– March 4, 2015, Wednesdays, 4:15-5:15pm for kids ages 7-11 years.

 

  • Lil’ Groovers with GrooveCorp

A fun, creative dance class, based on Hip Hop and Jazz themes, incorporating all the favourite music and dance moves. It’s a high energy class, where they get to learn many basic dance moves! This is not a drop in class. All dancers will be encouraged to participate in the final dance show. Dates and Times: January 14 – March 4, 2015, Wednesdays, 3:15-4:15pm. For kids ages 5-7 years.

 

  • Spanish Classes for Kids!

Beginners or intermediate, everybody is welcome to learn! This class continues from the Fall Session but is open to new children who would like to learn Spanish and are motivated to learn. Continuing students will enjoy learning more advanced words and phrases. Emilie is an experienced Tutor with a European French background.

Dates and Times: January 16 – March 13, 2015, (no session February 20, 2015), Fridays, 3:00 – 4:15pm. For kids ages 6-10 years.


Youth Programs

  • Co-Ed Youth Hockey: for kids ages 11-13 years on Mondays from 3:30pm-4:30pm. This is a new program for older kids who would like to play fun, non-contact hockey. Players learn skills and drills and enjoy a game of scrimmage hockey at the end of each session. Players are required to have full hockey equipment including a helmet in order to come onto the ice.

 

  • French Tutorial Class

This class is designed for youth are currently learning French and could use additional tutoring assistance. Emilie is a trained Tutor and will oversee the completion of homework – providing assistance and support.

Dates and Times: January 12 – March 9, 2015, Mondays, 3:00 – 4:15pm. For kids ages 11-14 years.  

 

Adult Programs

  • Yoga – Winter Wisdom Flow with Danielle Hachey, Registered Yoga Teacher

Hibernate, percolate, rejuvenate, cultivate, insulate…….A restorative Flow Practice that will focus on the inner wisdom of the winter season, while warming up the toes and keeping alignment in breath, body and mind.

  • Yoga for Snow Sports (Snow + Yoga = Snoga!) with Cynthia Anonuevo, Registered Yoga Teacher

This yoga class is designed to help you build balance, strength and coordination your snow sport. The focus of this class is to use breath, movement, and relaxation techniques to condition your mind and body to enhance and compliment your snow sport experience. However you play in the snow, this class is for you! All levels of experience are welcome.   • Karate for Adult & Teens with Scott Sheldo

Starting in September! The Rossland Chito-Ryu Karate Dojo is welcoming new students and any old Shotokan members to come and train with our Registered/Certified Karate Program. Chito-Ryu Karate has a thousand years of history, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD) in China.  Influenced by Chinese White Crane Kung-Fu and Okinawan Shuri-te and Naha-te, Chito-Ryu is one of the five original styles to come into history’s light and is one of it’s most exclusive. Train for self-defense, for competitions,  for fitness or  with the whole family! Registered with KarateBC, Registered/Certified Black Belt Instruction, NCCP Certified Coaches. Train with the 2014 Men’s Masters Black Belt Provincial Kata Silver Medalist and Weapons Kata Gold Medalist.

Participating in the Karate classes requires an annual membership payment to KarateBC ($55.00) and BC Chito-kai membership payment, ($12.00).   • Adult Art Class with Shelley Painter

This a general art class where adults will have a chance to explore different mediums. Instructions will be given and all materials will be provided. Participants will be encouraged to stretch their boundaries and explore techniques using a theme of their choice. This class will be divided into three, 3 weeks session, each one focusing on a different technique. Sign up for a session or all 3. Drawing from photos: 3 weeks (weeks 1-3) Bring in your own photos or find some online that you want to draw and bring them in and we’ll figure out how to draw them. Portraits, landscapes … it’s up to you. Adding colour to your drawing: 3 weeks (weeks 4-6) Using the drawing techniques you already have, we will explore how to use pastels and markers to add colour to your images. Computer media: 3 weeks (weeks 7-9) Come and learn how to use iMovie to create stop action and live action movie clips. It will be an intro to the basics of using a camera, shooting and using the iMovie program to edit and add titles and music. DATES: January 15 – March 12, 2015, TIMES: Thursdays, 7:00-8:30pm

Stingrays Swim Club
