Rossland Arena – available ice times this week

Looking to rent ice for a game of hockey or a birthday party or special event? The Rossland Arena has ice available on the following dates and times:

Friday November 7: Any time after 8:00pm until closing at 11:00pm

Saturday November 8: 8:00am to 10:00am

Any time after 5:00pm until closing at 11:00pm

Sunday November 9: 8:00am to 10:00am

The Lounge is often available at the same time too. Consider booking both the ice and the Lounge for a birthday party or special event. Fees to rent the ice and lounge are quite reasonable. Contact the Rec Department to discuss.

Folk Dancing this week!

On Thursday, November 6 at 7:15pm in the Miners Hall, you can join a great group of people to learn and dance in the English Country and Contra style. Drop in is $8.00. No experience is required and no partner is necessary! Don’t be shy! It’s an easy group who just want to have fun. For more information, please email the Coordinator, Dave, at dc@2cats.net.

Rossland Youth Action Network

The Youth Action Network is getting going for its 2014 / 2015 season! Mike Kent has lots of great programs and opportunities to roll out this year and the excitement is just starting! If you are a Youth between the ages of 12 and 18 or you have a Youth in that age bracket, please check out the website at www.rosslandyan.ca or “like” them on Facebook at, www.facebook.com/RosslandYAN. The Youth Action Network guarantees that teenagers in Rossland have “something to do”!

The Rossland Makerlab is back!

Starting October 9, drop in and get support in creating 3D Models, printing on the 3D printer and all things technology based. Every Thursday at the Seven Summits Centre for Learning, from 7:00-8:30pm for youth 12-18 yrs old.

Parkour & Freerunning

Parkour is the “Art of Movement”. Involvement in Parkour requires consistent, disciplined training with an emphasis on functional strength, physical conditioning, balance, creativity, fluidity, control, precision, spatial awareness, and looking beyond the traditional use of objects. The Parkour program is located in the RSS Auditorium from 7:00-8:30pm. Tuesdays is Pure Parkour for kids ages 8 years and up. Thursdays is Parkour and Freerunning for advanced athletes and you must be invited by an Instructor.

BOTTLE DRIVE in support of the Drama students

The RSS Drama students are heading to London England during the 2015 Spring Break. Please support their fundraising by donating your bottles and cans on Saturday, November 8 between 9:00am and 3:00pm. Recyclables can be left curbside in front of your home or dropped off at the empty lot on Columbia, across from the Prestige Hotel. If you’d like to arrange for a pickup, please call Lisa, at 362-9063.

Rossland Public Library

The Library has lots of great programs and evnts running in the next few days, weeks and months! On Fridays at 11:00am the Books and Babies songs and story time happens for little ones 0 to 30 months. The next Rossland Reads are on Wednesday, October 29 and Wednesday, November 5. Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm there is something going on in the Library for school aged kids. The Page Turners program is for kids 8-11 years old, the second Thursday of each month from 3:00-4:00pm. The Board Games Club for kids 6-12 years runs the fourth Thursday of each month from 3:00-4:00pm

REC Volleyball at RSS

REC Volleyball at RSS has cancelled due to low turnout. The Coordinator will try to rally the troups in January to see if there’s more interest.

Recreation Programs starting this Week

There are several Recreation Programs starting this week or continuing from last week. For more information about the specific programs, please take a look at the Fall / Winter Recreation Guide, at www.rossland.ca, City Hall, Recreation, Program Guide. You can drop by City Hall to register for a program or call our office, at 250-362-2327.

  • Itty Bitty FUNdamentals: Wednesdays from 1:30-2:15pm, starting November 5 for five weeks.

This FUN-filled program is all about expanding imagination through theatrical play, moving your body and making sounds. These Itty Bitty actors, ages 3-5 years will explore the art of storytelling with professional actor, Alicia Gray, while creating a strong foundation in the theatre.

  • Acting FUNdamentals: This FUN filled program is all about growing your imagination through the skillful use of theatre games, movement, props and vocal work. Young people ages 6-9 years will explore the art of storytelling with professional actor, Alicia Gray, while creating a strong foundation in the theatre. Session #2 starts November 5 until December 3 on Wednesdays, from 3:15-4:30pm.

  • Screen FUNdamentals: This FUN filled program is all about acting for the camera with professional actor, Alicia Gray. Learn about auditioning for film and television, casting directors, readers, producers, how to hit your mark and terminology on set. Session #2 runs from November 5 – December 3 on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:15pm for kids ages 8-12 years.

Recreation Programs to check out!

  • Tumbleweeds: A movement based parent / tot program for children ages Infant to 4 years – designed specifically to encourage children to explore movement through play based activities. Physical strength, flexibility, balance and coordination will be emphasized through the various activities. Each week is structured around a play-based routine including; free play, warm up songs, specialized activities, parachute games and ending with a story. Session #1: November 18-December 16, Tuesdays, 10:30-11:15am at the Miners Hall. Please register with Rossland Rec.

  • Language Classes for Kids! Although the classes have started, you can still register your little ones!

  • Preschool French: starts September 24 and runs until December 3. The class is for kids ages 3-4 years with a parent or guardian and runs for 45 minutes, from 10:00-10:45am. You can still register for the Language classes – registration is pro-rated to start when you do.

  • Preschool Spanish starts on Thursday, September 25 for kids 3-4 years with a parent or guardian and runs from 10:00-10:45am. The class runs for three months, ending at the beginning of December. You can still register for the Language classes – registration is pro-rated to start when you do.

Children’s Programs

  • Snowmen & Snowladies Pottery Class is on Thursday, November 13. The class for 4-6 year olds runs from 3:00-4:30pm and the class for 7-12 year olds runs from 5:00-6:30pm. This is a one day workshop class for kids to create and paint a snow man or lady using

  • Co-Ed Recreational Hockey:

Tuesdays: 9:45pm-11pm & Sundays: 9:15-10:30pm Join a great group of people for a fun, co-ed recreational hockey program at the Rossland Arena! This is non-contact drop-in hockey. Full equipment is required and some experience necessary. $10.00 drop-in or $80.00 for 10x pass. **Must sign waiver provided by Erika prior to playing on ice. *Punch passes can be bought from coordinator at hockey.

  • Karate for kids ages 6-14 years has started on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Miners Hall. The class runs from 3:30-5:00pm and the Fall Semester ends towards the end of December.

Youth Programs

  • Co-Ed Youth Hockey: for kids ages 11-13 years on Mondays from 3:30pm-4:30pm. This is a new program for older kids who would like to play fun, non-contact hockey. Players learn skills and drills and enjoy a game of scrimmage hockey at the end of each session. Players are required to have full hockey equipment including a helmet in order to come onto the ice.

Adult Programs

  • Step Classes: NEW! Step Classes start on Monday, September 29 and run on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:00-10:00am at the Miners Hall. Drop in is $8.00 or you can purchase a 10 punch pass for $70.00 at the Recreation Department.

  • Zumba Classes: New! Zumba is back on Monday and Friday mornings from 9:00am-10am in the Miners Hall! Jodie is an experienced, certified fitness Instructor who is new to town and looking forward to meeting everyone. Zumba classes include core strengthening principles while dancing to fun movement music.

  • Stretch & Strength Classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00-10:00am until the end of December. Drop in can be paid at the class or a $70.00 for 10x pass can be purchased at the Recreation Department.

  • Vinyasa Flow Yoga continues until mid-December. The class runs on Thursday evenings, in the Miners Hall from 6:00-7:00pm. Drop in can be paid for at the class and 10 x tickets can be purchased at the Recreation Department.

  • Basketball: Indoor, drop in basketball at RSS starts up this week, on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00pm.

  • Pickleball: Indoor Pickleball at RSS starts on Wednesday from 6:00-7:30pm this week.

  • Indoor Soccer: Join Rossland United Soccer Club! Wednesdays 7:30-9pm at RSS Gym. Coordinator Fletcher can collect fees on the court! This is recreational league that is $40/per session

Session #1: October 1-December 10 & Session #2: January 7-May 6, 2015.

Stingrays Swim Club

Take your swimming to the next level! Check out the Stingrays on Monday and / or Tuesday nights at the Trail Aquatic Centre. Juniors Swim from 5:00-6:00pm and Seniors from 6:00-7:00pm. Their website is; www.trailstingrays.ca

BlackJack Cross Country Ski Club

Cross Country Skiing Workshops

Please note that Coaches do not need to be expert skiers! Volunteering with Black Jack Ski Club Skier Development is a great way to participate in the club community and get involved in delivering these awesome programs. The 4-5 age groups (Bunnies) learn through playing and getting familiar with moving on the equipment. Parents, this course will open the door to have you actively participate with your child in the sport of XC skiing! The next introductory workshop is NOVEMBER 15/16, followed by another introductory workshop on NOVEMBER 22 and the Community Coaching workshop (2nd Stage) runs NOVEMBER 28-30.
