LETTER: SD 20 says no school May 27 due to rotating job action
Dear Parents and guardians:
I regret to inform you that the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF), the union representing teachers, has informed the school district that they will be engaged in rotating strikes and will be withdrawing teaching services in all SD20 sites on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. As of this time, this is the only day they have informed us that they will be withdrawing teaching services. On all other days, with teachers still not providing supervision for students outside of class time, the shortened day schedule will continue with all schools ending their day 15 minutes earlier than normal.
On Tuesday, May 27th, schools and other SD20 locations will be picketed by members of the BCTF. I expect that all union personnel in our schools will be directed by their executives to not cross the picket lines. Should this occur, I also expect that each school will have very limited, and in all likelihood, no teaching or support staff to supervise students.
While schools will be physically open there will be no instruction. For safety reasons I ask that parents keep all children home from classes on Tuesday May 27, 2014. I will be directing the school busses not to run on Tuesday May 27, 2014.
Thank you for your patience. We know that you share with us the desire to return to normal operations as quickly as possible and that this dispute will be concluded quickly. In the meantime, we will do our best to keep you informed in a timely manner.
