The Beaver Valley Nitehawks took advantage of a game in hand on the Nelson Leafs to close to within two points of the Murdoch Division leaders Tuesday night in Grand Forks.

Beaver Valley scored four unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the hometown Bruins 6-2 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League mid-week action.

Dallas Calvin led the way with a pair of goals with singles going to Mitch Foyle and Riley Brandt, his third of the game.

The teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes and 2-2 following the second intermmission.

Max Newton and Ravinder Shokar replied for Grand Forks, out shot 51-38 in the game.

Grayson Sharpe stopped all but two shots to register the win.

Kai McDonald took the loss for Grand Forks in goal.

Beaver Valley not trails the Leafs by two points entering weekend play. The Hawks face Castlegar in a home-and-home series beginning Friday in Fruitvale.

Meanwhile Grand Forks, on the verge of locking down a playoff spot a couple of weeks ago, are heading in the wrong direction after losing its fourth game in  a row.

The Bruins now trail Spokane Braves by 10 points with six game remaining in the regular season.

The Braves, coming off a 6-5 upset win over Creston Sunday in overtime, have their sights set on third place in the division, trailing Castlegar by a single point.

Grand Forks travels to Nelson to meet the Leafs Friday before hosting Nelson Saturday in the Boundary City.
