Ferry riders in Nanaimo got an unexpected show yesterday when a pod of Bigg’s killer whales (Orcas) cornered a pod of dolphins in Departure Bay.

The dolphins were Pacific white-sided dolphins and CTV News reported that the whales eventually killed and ate two of them.

Bigg’s whales are a type of transient orca that feeds on mammals unlike the orca’s usually seen in the Georgia Strait, which feed on fish.

The attached video was taken on-board a ferry by surprised spectators.
